Virtual Organization of Peruvians Helping Peruvians

One of the experiences in helping during disasters was acquired  with the volunteer work we did for QUIPUNET after the flooding caused by “El Niño” at Ica, Peru  in 1998.

Making Bread for the disaster victims:
Edwin San Roman, one of our volunteers, then living in Lima, Peru, saw the news of the devastation on TV.  Immediately he contacted his brother and together they took off to Ica (3 hours away) taking an industrial bread making equipment.   When they arrived to Ica, they asked Caritas for help and together they set up a “bakery” at a school.

Edwin then wrote to the QUIPUNET list asking for money to buy the ingredients to make bread. The response was overwhelming as pledges kept on arriving from many parts of the world.В  As the amounts were being posted, Edwin used his credit card to buy flour, lard, yeast, milk, etc.В  Edwin kept us abreast of what was happening,В  and he made us feel thatВ  we were there, helping!

This time…….. Edwin was in the Dominican Republic when the earthquake of last week, destroyed 85% of Ica and other cities in the South of Lima. His brother was in Lima, and this time he  took the bread making machine to Pisco, the closest city to Ica that they could reach, due to road closures.
This time……. we will be working again with Caritas and with SENATI (Servicio Nacional de Adiestramiento  en Trabajo Industrial).  We had worked with them before, training some women to be carpenters.

And this time…… we were given credit to buy the needed ingredients. And so, Edwin from the Dominican Republic, and Martha Davies from Tacoma in the State of Washington are hard at work with the new mission of providing 1 million bread buns to “give the daily bread” to the victims of the earthquake.

This time…….the bread will be more nutritious as you can see by the list of ingredients they sent me:

Edwin’s report:
“The goal is to make one million  pieces of bread and for this we need, only in flour, about 25,000 kilos.  This is a far-reaching goal, however, with your help we can do it!, Please Help Us!
